young coyotes, etc

This is the heart and guts of the DMB. Anything having to do with the music scene in Denver, the front range, or anywhere in Colorado for that matter, is up for discussion.

Well, I didn't see the shows you guys saw, so first, let's consider that maybe someone's experience is an anomaly.

Now, to provide my basis of argument, I'll let you know I've seen about as many shows as a 24 year old can see. Yes, probably still a fraction of many on this discussion board, but I've caught an amazing amount of acts in a variety of environments. And not just 'newfangled young people stuff' either. I've seen Chicago, AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac, Beach Boys, Motley Crue, Van Halen--all kinds of stuff my parents took me to as a squirt. Some of the great performers of rock and roll.

I've seen great concerts and I've seen miserable concerts, but generally, most acts fall somewhere in between. I'm the picky type, honestly...and I'm not a complete local music apologist either in the company of my close friends. I've seen some really subpar performances from bands that get plenty of local praise, only to impress me at a later date. And, by the way, I'm pretty sure I know who you're talking about at the 'private showcase' and I've definitely felt very similarly about them before. But they've killed it other times.

Young Coyotes I really enjoyed, though--really cool musical ideas, powerfully performed. However, if I'm being honest, I felt their lack of instrumental variety wore a little thin by the end of the 35-minute (or so) set. But, timing problems?

Maybe I should have one of my band members chime in, but I'm an asshole about maintaining meter. I'm not terribly blessed with musical talent, but good rhythm is something I've always had to offer to bands I've played in. It's also something that really sticks out to me as a spectator, and I didn't notice anything detrimental about Young Coyotes. In fact, I had a smile on my face the entire time two weeks ago. The new songs were great and the Black Sheep had this spectacular, cavernous reverb engulfing every channel. Cave-rock, yeah!

We may be sharing a bill on the 5th of March and I know we're playing together on the 20th, so maybe I'll form a different impression, but right now? One of the better shows I've seen locally in a while.

If the music samples posted on their myspace page are examples of the best that they can do, I'll cross them off my list of acts to go see.

Agreed on this analysis ... and i noticed no timing issues in their performance the other night ... they seemed to be fine in that department. Simply too loud for the room, and the acoustic guitar sounded like crap.

Don't base anything on those music samples on MySpace .. which were the first things they ever recorded, and were admitted to be lo-fi, both in terms of aesthetics and production.

If that's the first thing somebody hears because they want to check out the band, how can they not base their opinion off of that? They posted the tunes, and that's what they have chosen to represent them.

You're right as a matter of course. I'm suggesting here, today, that those tracks don't necessarily represent what the band sounds like live, or what their future recordings may sound like ... so therefore, it's best to not make a final judgment based on these tracks.

i researched a little online and these are some videos from the everyday joe show in fort collins everyone seems to be talking about. i don't understand how this could be overbearing, or how you would have to "walk" out, it seems like this is exactly how they play. doesn't seem bad to me...

but that's just my opinion.

That's the show Chris was talking about, not the one I was referring to. However, I can tell by listening to those videos that the sound in Everyday Joe's would have been super boomy. The brick walls in that place can really make things sound goofy and bad. What you're hearing on this video is probably the compressed single mic of the camera, which actually sounds ok for what it is.
