About us
The Denver Music Board used to be called "The Denver Message Board", which was started in 2003 by Al, Josh, and Jen to give Denver people a place to hang out, talk about stuff, and exchange ideas and opinions. The main thrust of the site has been our message boards, which have turned out to be the one place you can go to get the dirt on pretty much everything. We also have articles, which are about stuff. Except for when they're not.
The DMB has a long, arduous history - most of which we won't bore you with here. It underwent several changes between 2003 and 2008 - some cosmetic, some involving new features, and others having to do with the content of the boards themselves. The board even changed owners - to Brice in 2006 - but overall, it remained more or less the same. And all was well - until the board was hacked in the summer of 2008. And this forced us to make some dramatic changes.
In the fall of 2008, The Denver Message Board changed names to "The Denver Music Board". It's also changed its look, its functionality, and maybe even its personality. We loved the old board and we didn't want to change it, but we felt that if we wanted it to remain stable and maintainable, that we had to move it from the old codebase that Al originally wrote over to a more supported platform.
We understand that the changes will be viewed favorably by some and unfavorably by others, but our main goal is to keep the people who use this message board coming back - because when you get down to what really makes this thing work, it's the people that contribute to it, and the community that's built around it. It's not perfect - nor do we expect it to be - but as long as it's a place you can come to and "say what you want," that's the most important thing.
There are some things that this board has that the old board doesn't have, and vice-versa. For example, the old board used to have band profiles. The new board doesn't have that capability yet, but we hope that someday it will. There was a gig calendar on the old board too, but we replaced it with a gig list hosted by Gigbot that displays the next seven days worth of shows. This show listing now is the most comprehensive we've ever had on this site, so we hope that you like it.
There are other changes too, such as more extensive user profiles, better security, private messages, and the ability to subscribe to topics - but we don't want to bore you with the details. Play around with it though, and let us know what you think in the "Suggestions" board.
Our Rules
The DMB has many, many ethics, most of which are boring and involve old ladies with crutches. And pirates. And shiny things. We are pro-shiny things. We also believe in encouraging honesty. People say what they want here, and at times they may not be very politically-correct. Some people may be offended by the things that others may write here - but that's always been part of the board's appeal. So be prepared for that, because we don't police this board for political-correctness. Chances are, if you get offended, we won't give a damn.
We do however believe in encouraging mutual respect. This is a moderated board, and if we find that you are using your priviliges in a way that we don't like, you may find your post deleted by a moderator. There have even been a few cases where we were forced to "ban" people from the board - but only under the worst of circumstances. Our goal is to stay out of your business here as much as possible, so as long as you treat us and each other with respect, we won't get involved unless there is no other choice.
Signing Up
You need to create a profile if you want to post. We won't sell your email address. It's all completely confifential and private, and your email is well-protected against spambots and other nefariousness. If you sign up, you'll get to make a profile with your picture and some other information about you. Some people dig that. We don't care either way. If you sign up, you don't necessarily have to use your real name but it is encouraged. We reserve the right to send newsletters to our users, but we don't send them very often. We don't have much to say. In fact, you can opt out of the list and not receive newsletters from us at all - but we hope that since you're signing up, that you would interested in the kinds of things happening here. (You also get access to the Special Secret Board when you sign up, which is ... well, frankly it's neither all that special nor terribly secret, but whatever. It's the little things, right?)
Band Announcements
You can also post announcements and your gigs for your band on the "Plug Your Band" board. That's free too. We like bands, and we don't care how gay your band is. We want to let people know where they can catch your next show, so we'll put a place on our board so you can give everyone the word. Someone's got to, right? Deals can be worked out with venues as well. For those, see the advertising section.
Advertising on the DMB
Which reminds us: this site is one of the most-visited places in town by both local bands and people that dig local bands (or both), and you can advertise here if you're rich. Well, richer than us. And, frankly, we're poor. So it's pretty cheap, and it helps pay for the godawful bandwidth you people suck up. Contact Brice or D. Scott through our user profiles if you are interested. There's a neat email thingy on this new board that will allow you to do that.
Classified Advertising
There's even a free classifieds section as well. The usual rules apply: sales and purchases have everything to do with you and nothing to do with us - so don't come whining to us if some douchebag rips you off.
Thanks for dropping by. Now don't you have something to get off your chest?

Business, Systems Admin & Technical Guy
I stumbled across the DMB in 2005 when I was playing guitar with my old band, Ultrachronic. Now I play guitar for a band called The Flash Mob, I write a column in the Colorado Music Buzz called "The D-List", and I help run the DMB. I don't make my living on the local music scene or by my band - my day job is the typical 8 to 5, and usually, it's nothing very exciting. That's why I like the DMB - it adds a little excitement to my day.
